Your smile deserves the best of the best – you deserve a dentist dedicated to patients, and to keeping up to date with the advances in dentistry techniques
– Dr Ian Renton
Choosing the best dentist for your needs can be a daunting task. Australians are spoilt for choice, especially in Brisbane. There are more than 220 dentists within a 5 km radius of Brisbane city centre. So with that many options, how do you find a dentist?
When seeking the best family dentist, look past the beautiful decorative offices or the convenient or prestigious addresses. What is most important is the skill and experience of the person who will be working on your precious smile.
Things you should consider when choosing a dentist:
#1 – Experience
Experience is a critical part of any dentist’s qualifications. Preferably your dentist should have years of experience and hundreds of successful procedures under their belt.
Dr. Ian has over 40 years of dental experience and has performed thousands of successful procedures.
Your dentist should also be committed to continuing and updating their education regularly. The profession of dentistry has changed dramatically in the last decade in particular, due to advances in technology.
Dr Ian annually takes 20 hours of courses and many hours of self-study. This is beyond the requirements for his professional accreditation.
Additionally, Dr Ian is also constantly monitoring and mentoring his younger colleagues. He wants to ensure that they are supported to achieve the best result for their patients. They collaborate on complex cases to produce outcomes which take into account the patient’s needs, both aesthetically and functionally.
#2 – Memberships & Accreditations
The Australian Dental Association
Your dentist should be a member of the Australian Dental Association (ADA). The ADA is the peak national body, dedicated to providing minimum standards of conduct and education. Membership demonstrates a commitment to ongoing education, to the profession, and helping raise the awareness of dental health to the Australian public.
All dentists with Renton Dental are members of the ADA.
The Quality in Practice Association
Beyond the minimum, being accredited with by Quality Innovation Performance (QIP) means you are assured of an dental practice committed to constantly improving the quality of our practices and outcomes for patients.
You could compare this to choosing an “ISO 9000” accreditation you see in commercial industries.
Renton Dental is accredited by the QIP Association.
The Australian Prosthodontic Society
If you are considering or requiring cosmetic dentistry services, then membership in the Australian Prosthodontic Society is also a mark of expertise and dedication to helping people restore their smiles.
Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry focussed on designing, manufacturing, and fitting of artificial replacements for teeth and other parts of the mouth.
This applies to both cosmetic and restorative dental services.
Dr Ian is a member of the Australian Prosthodontic Society, and has been for over 20 years. specific number of years would be more powerful, if it’s not too much trouble to get the exact number.
#3 – Scope of services
A genuinely talented family dentist should be able to successfully and skillfully perform any dental procedure within their qualifications, including:
- cosmetic (dental implants and veneers, teeth whitening and dental crowns, and more),
- general dentistry (emergency dentistry, for children, and preventive) ,
- and therapeutic dentistry (including whole mouth restorations, dentures, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, root canal therapy, snoring & sleep apnea)
Dr. Ian offers all these services and more. See our list of Dental Services.
#4 Personal manner and attitude
You should feel comfortable with your dentist, and confident in his or her skill to work on your smile. A personal consultation with a dentist, where you are listed to, where you can discuss what you need and how they can help you, is the best way to determine if you have chosen the right person.
It is important that you choose a dentist whose focus and skill is in helping you achieve your best outcome in ways you feel most confident and comfortable with.
It’s helpful to remember all of the above points when selecting your dentist. Call now to book your initial consultation – we look forward to meeting you!
