Brush up on your at-home oral hygiene technique
You’re no doubt aware how important it is to brush your teeth carefully, every morning and night. But are you up to speed with the correct brushing technique to use at home every day?
To avoid damaging or scrubbing away your tooth enamel, choose a soft bristled brush and use it gently, brushing your teeth in a circular motion. Take care to brush each surface of every tooth, as well as along the gum line. Doing a thorough job of brushing your teeth should take you around two minutes.
Remember, even the correct tooth brushing technique won’t remove plaque from the tight spaces between your teeth. That’s why you must make the time to floss your teeth every day too, preferably before bed time. Flossing is the only way to reach into these tight areas and remove the plaque build-up that can otherwise eventually cause gum disease.
To floss correctly, start with a piece about 30cms long. Wind the ends around each middle finger, leaving about 5cms to work with. Place your index fingers on each side of the floss. Slide the floss gently up and down between your teeth, and carefully curve it around the base of each tooth. Make sure you clean beneath the gum line to remove the plaque that can accumulate here. As you move between each tooth, use a different clean 5cm section of floss.
Dietary tips to maintain your oral health
Most people would be aware that sugary food and drinks can cause tooth decay because of the way they react with the bacteria in plaque to produce acid, which can eventually cause dental cavities.
What you might not realise though, is that it’s not so much the amount of sugar you consume, but how frequently you do so. This is because saliva, your mouth’s natural defence against bacteria, usually helps to wash away sugar from your teeth before it has the chance to cause damage.
If you continually snack on sweetened drinks and food, your saliva will struggle to wash away the sugar and acid, making a cavity in your tooth much more likely.
Instead of eating sugary snacks, try to choose healthy alternatives such as fresh fruit, vegetable sticks, and dairy foods such as natural yoghurt, milk, or cheese – which can actually help to protect your teeth from dental decay.
And instead of reaching for a bottle of water, choose tap water instead. Its added fluoride content will help make your teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque and bacteria – and can even reverse early tooth decay.
